Lake Moondarra - a man made lake that doubles as a dam; the only water source for the residents of Mount Isa. Lake Moondarra only has one river in its catchment area (unlike many other lakes or dams), the Leichhardt River.
Even when it does not rain in town, so long as we get rain south of town, we can be assured the Leichhardt River will flow, and eventually make it’s way to Lake Moondarra.
It is not unusual to see the water level at the Lake drop to a terrifying level, only for the (sometimes) short wet season to bring the liquid gold and fill it up again. It is rare to see the Dam overflowing - when it does; it is a pretty magnificent sight.
This image was taken with a drone, when the Lake was around 50% full, when the Lake is 100% full - the waterline is past the large Mahogany tree you see on the right.
